Caring for Your Handwoven Wool Kilim

A handwoven wool kilim is a flatweave textile crafted by skilled artisans using time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Unlike pile rugs, kilims have no raised surface—the design is an integral part of the woven structure itself. Wool's natural resilience, lanolin content, and inherent stain resistance make it an exceptional fiber, but the flatweave construction and handmade fringes require specialized care to honor the craftsmanship of your JUSTRUG.

Flatweave Vacuuming

Vacuum your kilim once a week using suction only. Crucial: Never use a beater bar on a flatweave. Without pile to buffer the impact, the rotating brush will aggressively pull at the woven structure, loosening warp and weft threads. Vacuum both sides periodically—flip the kilim and vacuum the underside to remove embedded grit that accelerates wear from below.

Spill & Stain Protocol

Wool contains natural lanolin, which provides a degree of built-in stain resistance. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For food-based stains, scrape off solids gently with a spoon before blotting. Never rub or scrub. Wool fibers felt (mat together permanently) when agitated while wet. For persistent stains, use a solution of white vinegar and cold water (1:1 ratio) applied to the cloth.

Preservation & Heritage

Rotate your kilim 180° every 3–4 months—flatweaves show wear more visibly than pile rugs. Wool is naturally UV-resistant but will fade over extended exposure. Professional washing every 12–18 months is ideal. Handwoven kilims should be washed by a specialist rug cleaner experienced in flatweave textiles—never by a standard carpet cleaning service.

Strict Prohibitions

  • Never machine wash or tumble dry. Wool kilims will shrink, felt, and lose structural integrity.
  • Never vacuum over fringes. They are structural warp threads and will be destroyed.
  • Never use hot water. Heat causes wool fibers to felt and shrink irreversibly.
  • Avoid moth-prone storage. Clean the kilim before long-term storage and use cedar or lavender sachets.
