Washable Reversible Kilim Care

Caring for Your Washable Reversible Kilim

Your washable reversible kilim is crafted from recycled cotton and polyester—a sustainable blend that combines the natural softness of reclaimed cotton fibers with polyester's stain resistance and colorfastness. The reversible flatweave construction gives you two distinct faces to enjoy, and the machine-washable design makes maintenance remarkably convenient. However, even washable rugs require proper technique to preserve their structure, color, and longevity.

Flatweave Vacuuming

Vacuum your reversible kilim 1–2 times per week using suction only. Crucial: Never use a beater bar on a flatweave—without pile to buffer the impact, a rotating brush will tug at the woven structure and loosen threads. Vacuum both sides periodically—the reversible design means both faces collect dust and debris equally. Flip the kilim and vacuum the underside to remove embedded grit.

Machine Washing Protocol

This kilim is designed to be machine washable. Wash on a cold or gentle cycle (max 30°C / 86°F) using a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent. Never use powder detergent—undissolved granules can become trapped in the flatweave structure. Wash the kilim alone or with similar colors only. Do not overload the machine—the kilim needs room to move freely for even cleaning.

Drying & Shape Recovery

After washing, lay the kilim completely flat on a clean surface to air dry. Never tumble dry, hang, or fold while wet—this causes permanent creasing and distortion in the flatweave structure. Ensure the kilim is fully dry on both sides before placing back on the floor. Drying may take 24–48 hours depending on humidity. A fan or open windows will accelerate the process.

The Golden Rules

  • Machine wash cold (max 30°C) with mild liquid detergent on a gentle cycle.
  • Vacuum both sides with suction only 1–2 times per week—no beater bar on flatweaves.
  • Air dry flat until completely dry on both sides before returning to the floor.
  • Use a non-slip rug pad to prevent shifting, bunching, and corner curling on both faces.

Strict Prohibitions

  • Never tumble dry. Heat and mechanical tumbling cause irreversible shrinkage and distortion in the flatweave.
  • Never use bleach or powder detergent. Bleach damages recycled cotton dyes; powder residue embeds in the weave.
  • Never vacuum over fringes. They are structural warp threads and will be destroyed by vacuum rollers.
  • Never fold for storage. Roll the kilim to prevent permanent crease lines in the flatweave structure.
